The Currents Receives Brownie Award from Canadian Urban Institute.
The Windmill Development Group has been honoured by the Canadian Urban Institute for The Currents, a residential condominium and theatre project to be built in 2005 in Ottawa, Ontario.
The Currents won the Best Small to Medium Scale Project at the 2004 Brownie Awards, which recognize leadership, innovation and environmental sustainability in brownfields redevelopment across Canada. Brownfields are properties that have been underutilized or even abandoned due to past environmental contamination, and are increasingly recognized for their redevelopment potential.
Windmill will develop a contaminated site, used for decades as a gas station, dry cleaner and car wash, to build The Currents, which is targeted to be Canada’s greenest residential high rise. Construction will begin with environmental remediation of the contamination which will be achieved by excavation and off site disposal.
The award, chosen among 19 finalists in the competition, was given in recognition of both the environmentally friendly features of the building, and the leadership in demonstrating how these green features can pay for themselves in the high-end condo market.
